Examples of art courses and prompts
Scott loves to make paintings based on a theme, experiment with color palettes, and create a series of artwork pieces.
Here are a few samples of previous classes Scott led to give you ideas about how you can get creative:
Color Palette Inventory Studies. Scott instructed his students at California College of the Arts (CCA) on a color theory project. The prompt Scott provided to his students:
Extract the color palette from a famous painting of your choosing into proportional and non-proportional inventories. Then apply those inventories towards two original designs using both the equivalent proportions and random proportions.
Color Constancy Studies. Scott instructed students at California College of the Arts (CCA) to explore how varying light in the environment impacts hues and color values. The prompt Scott provided to his students:
Using a series of photos taken of the same place capturing dawn, daylight, and dusk, make a series of paintings that explore color and light shifts throughout the day.
Pet Portraits. Scott instructed his students at Stanford University to bring in a digital photo of their childhood pet: a close-up image of a beloved cat or dog. The prompt Scott provided to his students:
Working on canvas with oil paint, use your photo as a reference to paint a realistic rendition of the subject. Pay special attention to the animal’s facial expression. Put focus on the eyes to bring the pet’s personality to life.
